Islanders' Boychuk will return to lineup vs. Red Wings

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Islanders' defense will get a boost Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings, as head coach Jack Capuano announced Johnny Boychuk is set to play in his first game of 2016.

"We never want to rush guys back, obviously, and the few extra days were important," Capuano said of Boychuk, who has missed 12 games. "Our defense has been playing pretty well, too."

The 32-year-old was injured Dec. 31 after crashing into the boards in an attempt to hit Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel.

He has recorded three goals and 11 assists.

With Boychuk coming off the injured reserve, the Islanders announced fellow defenseman Scott Mayfield was loaned to Bridgeport of the AHL.
