Canadiens GM: Price wasn't rushed back, no need to pursue another goalie

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin insists Carey Price didn't come back too soon.

"Based on our doctors, based on Carey, based on everything we had, he played two games (and) he was fine, practiced, (and) he was fine, it was not the reason that he got injured (again) that he came back too quick," Bergevin told reporters Monday.

Price was ruled out for at least another six weeks Monday morning after aggravating his lower-body injury in Wednesday's win over the New York Rangers.

Bergevin said Monday that he doesn't believe a move to acquire another goaltender is necessary, based on the play of Mike Condon and Dustin Tokarski, as well as prospect Zach Fucale in the AHL.

"I don't feel there's a need," Bergevin said. "We have Mike, 'Ticker' (Tokarski), (and) I was at the (Toronto) Marlies game against (the) St. John's (IceCaps) last night and Zach played very well. I know he's a young goalie, but that's why you have many goalies in your system."

Condon is 8-2-3 with a 2.19 GAA and .916 save percentage in 14 games, while Tokarski allowed two goals on 13 shots in a 6-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche in his only NHL appearance of the season on Nov. 14.

Bergevin said anything's possible should another Canadiens netminder suffer an injury.

"Now if we lose three goalies, that would be a different story," the GM said with a laugh.

Price missed nine games before returning and aggravated the injury in his third game back. His .934 save percentage ranks third in the NHL among qualified starters, although he's been limited to 12 contests.
