Veteran defenseman Tim Gleason has given up his attempted comeback.

The 32-year-old informed the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday that he is ending his professional tryout.

"He looked and felt good physically, but didn’t feel up to the grind of the NHL mentally," Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said. "We wish Tim and his family nothing but the best."

Gleason signed a tryout agreement with the club last week.

He notched 107 points in 546 games over parts of nine seasons with the Hurricanes, tallying 142 points in 727 career contests with Carolina as well as the Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Washington Capitals.

The Ottawa Senators selected him 23rd overall in 2001.
