Rangers spoil banner night for defending champion Blackhawks

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

A little slice of glory.

The New York Rangers scored three times in the first period on opening night and hung tough through the final 40 minutes to claim a 3-2 upset win over the Chicago Blackhawks, on an evening that saw the defending champs hang a sixth Stanley Cup banner.

Rangers rookie Oscar Lindberg scored his first goal a minute and 43 seconds into the contest. Kevin Klein and Derek Stepan tacked on tallies before the period was up.

Chicago shook off the sluggish start as the game wore on and appeared to have the equalizer in the final moments, but a quick whistle nullified what looked like Patrick Kane's first of the season.

The Blackhawks, too, received contributions from a rookie forward, as Artemi Panarin scored on his first attempt at an NHL goal, beating Henrik Lundqvist clean on an abbreviated breakaway.

Teuvo Teravainen also scored for the Blackhawks, who fired 34 shots on Lundqvist in defeat.

Corey Crawford stopped 24 shots for Chicago.
