Daniel Sprong appears to have made the Pittsburgh Penguins' opening night lineup.

The 18-year-old survived Saturday's cuts, which included the release of veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar from his tryout contract.

Sprong was drafted 46th overall by the Penguins in June's draft.

He scored 39 goals and added 49 assists in 68 games for the QMJHL's Charlottetown Islanders last season.

Defenseman Derrick Pouliot, the Penguins' eighth-overall pick in 2012, was among three players assigned to the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday.

Pouliot recorded 24 points in 31 AHL games in 2014-15, adding seven points in 34 games at the NHL level.

Forwards Bryan Rust and Jean-Sebastien Dea were also assigned to the AHL. Forward Kevin Porter and defenseman David Warsofsky were placed on waivers Saturday, and will be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton if they clear Sunday.
