Oilers place Nikitin on waivers for purpose of assignment

The Edmonton Oilers placed defenseman Nikita Nikitin on waivers with the intent of assigning him to the AHL.
Nikitin carries a $4.5-million cap hit this season, as he did in 2014-15 when he collected 10 points in 42 games with the Oilers.
If Nikitin (EDM) clears waivers and assigned to AHL, would have $3.55 million cap hit. Would save $0.95M of his $4.5M cap hit.

The 29-year-old blue-liner was a fifth-round pick of the St. Louis Blues in 2004.
