David Booth on release from Panthers: 'Older guys are getting phased out'

David Booth faces an uncertain future after being released from his pro tryout with the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.

Upon learning he had indeed been cut, the 30-year-old lamented the shift towards relying on youth to fill out NHL rosters in today's salary cap era.

"Back in the day, it seemed like the older guys were pushing the younger guys back. Now things are reversed. The older guys are getting phased out," he said, according to George Richards of the Miami Herald. "It's always tough coming into camp and trying to play your best in the first three games. It's unfortunate.

"I feel I'm still a great player. This place felt comfortable and like a place I could do some of the things I've done before. But this is a business and sometimes you're just a number. They have to make the decisions they feel are best for the team."

General manager Dale Tallon wished Booth well, while admitting there were younger guys he felt deserved a longer look.

"It was very tough because he played very hard," said Tallon. "We have young guys ... It was hard to fit (Booth) into the slot. It was a difficult decision and I wish him all the best."

Among those still in camp are young forwards Quinton Howden, Connor Brickley, Garrett Wilson, and Lawson Crouse.

As far as what's next for Booth, he's clearly hoping another NHL team comes calling.

"We'll see what happens next. I don't know what the next step will be. I want to keep playing but I believe I'm better than (playing in the AHL). It's just a matter of getting my timing down, getting everything back."

Booth scored seven goals and added six assists in 59 games with Toronto last season. He recorded a career-high 31 goals with the Panthers back in 2008-09.
