Pickard had an opportunity to earn the backup job in preseason but was unable to beat out Reto Berra for the No. 2 spot, and will start the season in the AHL. The roster move will allow the young 23 year-old to get ample playing time at the lower level and further develop his game, but don't be surprised if he gets called up to start multiple games during the season if Semyon Varlamov is unable to go.
