Report: Ducks, Despres closing in on long-term extension

Jake Roth / USA TODAY Sports

The Anaheim Ducks might have the first of three key pending restricted free-agent defensemen signed before their season officially begins.

Simon Despres is reportedly close to agreeing to terms on a long-term deal, TVA's Renaud Lavoie reports.

Despres came to Anaheim last season in a trade deadline deal that saw Ben Lovejoy return to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He quickly carved out an important role on the Ducks' blue line and chipped in with 13 points in 32 games across the regular season and playoffs.

Hampus Lindholm and Sami Vatanen are also controllable free agents at the end of the season.
