The New York Rangers added Chris Drury to their front office on Friday, naming the former captain director of player development.

"It was an opportunity to bring someone into the organization, a former (Ranger), that can add so much," general manager Jeff Gorton said. "It's pretty obvious what he can do and how energetic he was for an opportunity to come back with the Rangers and work here."

Drury retired from the NHL in 2011 after playing his final four seasons with the Rangers. Prior to his New York stint he played three years with the Buffalo Sabres, one with the Calgary Flames, and four with the Colorado Avalanche, where he won the Stanley Cup in 2001.

The 39-year-old won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie in 1999, and earned the Hobey Baker Award as the top U.S. college hockey player in 1998.
