Scrivens on Oilers' acquisition of Talbot: 'I don't see how I could be upset'

Ben Scrivens may be in tough to retain the starting job for the Edmonton Oilers, but he won't deny that the acquisition of Cam Talbot from the New York Rangers is a positive step.

On the heels of the worst statistical season of his career, Scrivens watched new general manager Peter Chiarelli trade for Talbot in a serious attempt to shore up the rebuilding club's goaltending.

While Scrivens doesn't feel his skills have diminished, any attempts to improve the team are a good thing in his eyes.

"We need two goalies to play," Scrivens told Mark Spector of Sportsnet. "Look, we didn't have a great year as a team last year, I didn't personally have a great year. I don't see how I could be upset about our organization trying to get better in any way it can."

Both goalies are fairly inexperienced as starters, with Talbot posting better numbers than Scrivens, albeit in less than half the games played.

Goalie GP Record SV% GAA SO
Ben Scrivens 129 42-56-17 .905 2.90 7
Cam Talbot 57 33-15-5 .931 2.00 8

In fairness, Talbot's experience came with New York Rangers teams that advanced to the Stanley Cup Final and won the Presidents' Trophy. Meanwhile, Scrivens' time in the NHL has been spent with the Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs, with a brief stint with the Los Angeles Kings - for whom he posted a save percentage of .931 in 19 games - sandwiched between.

While many seem to have Talbot penciled in for the No. 1 job, Scrivens remains intent on being the goalie that helps Edmonton take the next step.

"At the end of the day," he continued, "we all want the same thing: We want the Oilers in the playoffs. We all want to be in the net for that game, but the coaches make that decision."
