Report: Red Wings' Datsyuk could miss start of season after ankle surgery

The Detroit Red Wings could start 2015-16 behind the eight ball.

Star center Pavel Datsyuk, who underwent offseason ankle surgery, isn't expected back until early November, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

Originally believed to be out for only four-to-six weeks, Datsyuk's doctor reportedly wants to evaluate the ruptured tendons in his ankle after three months, or near the end of September.

At that point, he would begin skating and preparing for the regular season.

As a result, the Red Wings are unlikely to buy out the contract of Stephen Weiss due to the need for depth at center. The injury could also open the door for young Dylan Larkin to crack the NHL roster out of training camp.

Datsyuk, 35, recorded 65 points in 63 games last season.
