Report: Devan Dubnyk seeking over $5M per season on new, long-term contract

Contract talks between Devan Dubnyk and the Minnesota Wild appear set to go down to the wire.

The soon-to-be unrestricted free agent, a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, is looking to capitalize on a strong stretch with the team this past season, and is seeking a long-term deal with an average annual salary of more than $5 million, according to Michael Russo of the Star Tribune.

The two sides are believed to be planning to meet in Florida in advance of the NHL Draft on June 26, but have not spoken at length since the combine

At present, the Wild have two goalies already under contract for next season - Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper - both of whom were clearly supplanted by Dubnyk on the depth chart.

With the likes of Mikael Granlund and Erik Haula also looking for new deals as restricted free agents, the Wild could be a bit too cash-strapped to throw that much money Dubnyk's way, despite what he was able to achieve in Minnesota.

The club did, however, free up some money by waiving Matt Cooke on Thursday.

Dubnyk's numbers with the Wild, albeit in a small sample size, suggest he's worthy of the kind of deal he's looking for. Whether Minnesota can make the space and get a contract signed before other teams start sniffing around remains to be seen.
