Stars GM Nill on pursuing a back-up goalie: 'There are lots of options'

The Dallas Stars are considering a bunch of different ways to fill their back-up goalie position this summer.

The team placed goaltender Jussi Rynnas on unconditional waivers Thursday, allowing him to move on to the KHL. Meanwhile, the team remains in negotiations with Jhonas Enroth, but with nothing carved in stone, general manager Jim Nill is weighing his options.

"There are lots of options," Nill told Mark Stepenski's of Inside Edge. "The goalie market has opened up a little bit. There's a lot of different names getting thrown out there. It's a pretty wide-open market for a backup goalie."

The team has 2010 first-round pick Jack Campbell in their system, but after having a mediocre 2015 season that saw him sent down from the Texas Stars of the AHL to the ECHL, the team is not ready to give him regular time in the NHL.

"For Jack Campbell, he's going to be the No. 1 goaltender in Texas. He needs to grab that," said Nill. "He needs to stay healthy, and he needs to play. He needs to develop."

The Stars also have Philippe Desrosiers of the QMJHL's Rimouski Oceanic, who was named the CHL's goaltender of the year, but like Campbell, the team wants the youngster to develop before making the jump to the big leagues.

With all these scenarios in place, the Stars look like they could be a team to watch when the draft and free agency come around.
