BC-AP Sports Preview Digest

Some of the sports stories The Associated Press is covering Wednesday. A full Sports Digest will be sent about 3 p.m. All times EDT:

ZURICH - Swiss prosecutors open criminal proceedings into FIFA's awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, only hours after the arrest of seven soccer officials pending extradition to the U.S. in a separate probe of ''rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted'' corruption. FIFA, meanwhile, says Friday's presidential election will go ahead as planned with Sepp Blatter seeking a fifth term. Blatter was not cited in either investigation.

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Golden State Warriors try again to close out the Houston Rockets and reach the NBA Finals for the first time in 40 years. The Rockets, who trail 3-1, are looking to move closer to becoming the first NBA team to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first three games. Game starts 9 p.m.

CHICAGO - Corey Perry and the Anaheim Ducks attempt to finish off Jonathan Toews and the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. Anaheim beat Chicago 5-4 in overtime Monday for a 3-2 lead. Game starts 8 p.m.

NEW YORK - The wild Eastern Conference final between the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning has come down to a Game 7. After the first six, who knows what to expect? Blowout, shootout, tight defensive battle. It's all been on display.

PARIS - Simona Halep becomes the highest seeded player to exit the French Open so far as last year's runner-up loses 7-5, 6-1 to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the second round. The third-seeded Halep, who reached her first major final at Roland Garros in 2014, struggled from the start on Court Suzanne Lenglen and was overpowered in the second set. The 70th-ranked Croatian had also defeated Halep at the U.S Open last year.

IRVING, Texas - Before he was the Masters champion, Jordan Spieth twice made the cut as a teenage amateur at the Byron Nelson Championship. Now he plays there for the first time since winning the green jacket.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - After helping bid David Letterman a fond farewell, Peyton Manning resumes preparations for what many believe is the five-time MVP's own goodbye season.

DESTIN, Fla. - The increase in the value of a scholarship to cover cost of attendance varies from school to school. That worries some coaches who believe it could be used as a recruiting advantage, and football coaches in the Southeastern Conference have been particularly vocal about their concerns.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Defending champion Florida leads five SEC teams into the Women's College World Series, which begins Thursday at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

INDIANAPOLIS - The latest Academic Progress Rate results from the NCAA show athletes continue to improve their performance in the classroom even in two sports that have traditionally lagged behind others. This year's overall score, 978, is a record high. But money continues to play a big role in academic success.
