Another name has emerged in the Boston Bruins' search for a new general manager.

Former Washington Capitals GM George McPhee recently interviewed for the position, a league source confirmed to Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe.

McPhee is known for assembling Washington's core of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson and Braden Holtby - and also for dealing young Filip Forsberg for Martin Erat in a desperate attempt to add immediate offense to the lineup.

The widespread belief, however, is that Bruins assistant GM Don Sweeney is set to be promoted, with the only holdup being the potential availability of New York Rangers assistant GM Jeff Gorton.

Shinzawa reports:

"They've been waiting for something, and that's Jeff," said an NHL source. "That much is clear."

Gorton, who was the assistant GM in Boston for seven seasons and interim GM in 2006, has two strong backers among his former employers: CEO Charlie Jacobs and former GM Harry Sinden.

Gorton's powerful advocates may not matter, though. Rangers GM Glen Sather has not granted the Bruins permission to interview Gorton.

Since Gorton seems to be the heir apparent for the GM role in the Big Apple, the Bruins will likely be left to decide between a familiar face in Sweeney and the aforementioned McPhee.
