The Columbus Blue Jackets apparently received a bombshell from Prague this week.

Defenseman Mike Reilly, who is representing the United States at the IIHF World Championship, informed the Blue Jackets he is leaving the University of Minnesota with plans to explore the free-agent market, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.

Columbus selected Reilly in the fourth round of the 2011 draft. The two-time Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year led the Gophers with 42 points as a junior in 2014-15, and was one of two blue-liners named as a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.

Reilly has officially de-registered from university and will become a free agent in June following a 30-day waiting period.
