Minnesota Wild forward Charlie Coyle scored the eventual game-winning goal and added an assist as the United States defeated Switzerland 3-1 to advance to the semifinals at the World Hockey Championship.

Coyle and San Jose Sharks winger Ben Smith scored goals less than a minute apart in the second period to give the Americans a 2-1 lead.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Gardiner added an insurance marker in the third with a shot that found its way through traffic and got past Colorado Avalanche goaltender Reto Berra.
