Overview

Gabriel Carlsson is a big blue-liner who excels in his own zone through sound positioning and smart anticipation. He uses his 6-foot-4 frame to cut off passing lanes and win physical battles, which should become even easier once he adds more muscle.

Carlsson proved he can hold his own with professionals in Sweden's top division, earning time in regular-season and playoff contests. His long stride and good balance make him difficult to shake in one-on-one situations.

While he could be an elite shutdown defenseman, there isn't much to note in Carlsson's offensive game. He makes a good first pass but is unlikely to carry the puck or join a rush in transition. Even without any offensive upside to speak of, Carlsson is one of the more intriguing defensive prospects in the draft due to his combination of size, mobility and awareness.

What the scouts are saying

"Carlsson is a tall, physically strong two-way defenseman who has improved a lot during the season. He plays a smart, cool, mature game and uses his size without being overly aggressive. A smart player who can both pass or play the puck out of danger." - Goran Stubb, NHL Director of European Scouting
