NHL Game Summary - Pittsburgh at NY Rangers

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Carl Hagelin scored the series-clinching goal at 10:52 of overtime as the New York Rangers advanced with a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of this Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

In the extra session, Dominic Moore controlled the puck in the right corner boards and Hagelin eventually worked it out, whipping a shot in from the right circle for the win.

"I don't remember all of it, to be honest," said Hagelin of the goal. "I didn't do much that shift until I saw Dom was in trouble behind the net. I went behind there to pick up the puck and then I just skated around the circle and I took a shot and somehow it went in."

Derek Stepan had the other goal and Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves for the Rangers, who won a first-round matchup for the fourth straight time and will face the winner of the Washington/NY Islanders series in the semifinals.

"Anytime you can close out a series and heal some bumps and bruises - which we certainly have a few - it's a good thing," Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault remarked. "We will take the next couple of days here to recuperate and recover and we'll get right back to strategizing for the next series and getting ready."

Nick Spaling had the only goal of the game for the Penguins, who had lost to the Rangers in the semifinals last season. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 34 shots in the loss.

Skating on the power play, the Rangers took a 1-0 lead 4:23 into the game. The team controlled the puck in the zone with Dan Boyle sending a shot from the high slot through a screen and Stepan batting in the rebound for his second of the series.

Lundqvist needed to stop just six shots in the first period, but he came up big just under two minutes in when he made a pair of saves on Brandon Sutter.

Fleury kept pace with two stops on Derick Brassard shots a bit later, and his team finally got on the board with 2:37 to play in the second frame.

Sidney Crosby fired the puck from the right side with both Steve Downie and Spaling crashing the net. The puck eventually hit off Spaling and went in. After a brief review, the on-ice call was upheld and the game went into the second intermission tied.

Both sides hit posts early in the third period, and the Rangers blew a golden opportunity to go ahead with just under four minutes to play after Boyle whiffed on a wide-open one-timer from the left side.

Lundqvist made 14 saves in the frame, and Fleury seven to move the game to overtime.

"We had 27 shots the last two periods. We fired everything we could at them and they (the shots) came up short," Penguins head coach Mike Johnston said.
