Rangers' Girardi needs dental work after taking puck to face

Brad Penner / USA Today

New York Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi is getting his teeth checked out after taking a puck to the face late in Game 1 against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday.

Girardi left the contest holding his mouth after he was hit in the third period. He did not return to the contest and coach Alain Vigneault didn't have much of an update during his post-game comments.

"The only thing I heard after the game was the dentist was looking at (Girardi)," Vigneault told reporters. "That's the only update I have for you."

Girardi isn't likely to miss time if the damage is cosmetic, but he might be wearing some extra facial protection for Game 2 on Saturday.
