Nail Yakupov will skip World Championship to nurse hip injury

Nail Yakupov won't need to try out for Russia after all.

The Edmonton Oilers have announced that Yakupov will not participate in Russia's training camp or next month's World Hockey Championship to nurse a hip injury.

"Nail has been suffering from bilateral hip injuries this season and after further examination and MRI imaging, he requires additional treatment and rehabilitation," Dr. Dhiren Naidu, the Oilers' team physician said on the team's official website

It was reported that Yakupov would have to earn a spot on the team, unlike most NHLers, who are offered participation from their respective countries.

Yakupov signed a two-year, $5-million extension Monday.
