Report: Devils could dangle Eric Gelinas in search for young forward

The New Jersey Devils may be set to part with one of their young defensemen in order to add more scoring up front.

General manager Lou Lamoriello will reportedly test the trade market on 23-year-old Eric Gelinas, and will be in search of a young forward, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

Gelinas, drafted in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft, has appeared in 122 games for the Devils, with 13 goals and 35 assists to his credit. He also ranked third among New Jersey defensemen by averaging 0.74 points per game at even strength this season.

As Friedman notes, Gelinas may be somewhat expendable due to the long-awaited emergence of Adam Larsson, who average 1.08 points per game in 5-on-5 situations.

At any rate, the Devils were the oldest team in the NHL this season, and desperately need an infusion of young talent - even if it means giving up some defensive depth for a forward.
