Panthers' Tallon on Jagr contract extension: 'We'll talk after the season'

Jaromir Jagr wants to deal with his future one step at a time.

Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon met with Jagr's agent Friday, presumably to discuss a contract extension, but the veteran forward is preoccupied with Florida's playoff hunt and doesn't want to be distracted by contract talks.

"This is too important a time; we'll get to it when time is right," Tallon told George Richards of the Miami Herald. "We'll talk after the season."

Tallon said Jagr is focused on Saturday's game against the Montreal Canadiens, which the Panthers need to win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. Florida enters the contest with a 3.5 percent chance of making the postseason according to Sports Club Stats.

Florida wants to re-sign Jagr after trading a pair of draft picks to acquire the 43-year-old who plans on playing until he's 50, but Tallon is aware the decision is up to Jagr.

"I can see affect he's had on young players and our team," Tallon said. "If he wants to stay, we have definite interest."
