The San Jose Sharks have taken a bite out of the NCAA free agent market.
The club has signed Wisconsin goaltender Joel Rumpel to a one-year entry-level contract, general manager Doug Wilson announced Thursday.
Rumpel recently completed his final season of college hockey, posting a career record of 53-50-11 with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage over four seasons.
In 2013-14, he was named as a finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as one of the nation's top players.
Rumpel will begin his pro career in the AHL with the Sharks' minor-league affiliate.
