Tanev signed a five-year, $22.25 million contract extension with the Canucks on Tuesday, the team's official site reports.

Analysis:

The blueliner recorded an assist Sunday against the Coyotes to giving him 16 points in 60 games to date, but he earned the extension more for his work in front of the Vancouver net. By both traditional (plus-10 rating) and advanced (plus-5.44 Corsi 5-on-5; third on the team), the Canucks are a better unit when Tanev is on the ice. He'll continue to see 20-plus minutes per game on the top pairing with Alex Edler.
