Islanders, Boychuk agree to 7-year contract extension worth reported $42M

The New York Islanders locked up top-defenseman Johnny Boychuk for the forseeable future.

The deal is for a reported seven years and worth $42 million, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday.

Boychuk announced the signing by joining Twitter and making the announcement his first tweet.

"Ever since I came to the Islanders, the organization has been incredible to both myself and my family," Boychuk said, in a press release.

"I am proud to be an Islander and look forward to competing every night in front of such a passionate fan base for many years to come."

It became apparent earlier in the day that Boychuk and management were coming close to an agreement.

ESPN hockey insider Pierre LeBrun reported Boychuk and the Islanders were close to signing an extension.

Both sides were believed to have been in contract negotiations for some time.

The move looks to be general manager Garth Snow's next step in solidifying the team's defense for the future. The team agreed to a seven-year extension with Nick Leddy last month.

Boychuk was acquired by the team at the start of the season and leads all Isles defenders with 32 points in 59 games.
