Alfredsson open to future role in Senators' front office

Ottawa Senators executive Daniel Alfredsson?

The former captain, who retired as a member of the club in December, is considering beginning his post-playing career with a move into the team's front office.

"Maybe that would be the way to start if you go that route," Alfredsson told Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun.

"I'm not naive enough to think I can step into those positions full-time right away. Can I help out in those areas? Of course I can with my experience."

Alfredsson spent 17 seasons with the Senators before playing his final one as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. He signed a one-day contract to retire as a Senator late last year.

The 42-year-old was given the key to the city of Ottawa on Thursday.

Senators general manager Bryan Murray was on hand for the ceremony and said management has discussed the possibility of adding Alfredsson to the front office.

"He wanted a year or so away and I think that's important for him, but it's certainly something (owner) Eugene (Melnyk) and I have discussed if (Alfredsson) wants to do it,"

The former forward said he's still deciding whether he can fully commit to an executive role.

"If I'm going to do something in a full-time job I want to do it 100 percent. I don't know if right now is the right time with the stage the kids are at. That's the way I feel."
