(SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Kings will try to avoid a fourth loss in a row on Tuesday night when the playoff hopefuls visit the Edmonton Oilers.
The Kings have followed up an eight-game winning streak with a trio of losses, including setbacks in Anaheim and Winnipeg to begin a three-game road trip. That has Los Angeles tied for third place in the Pacific Division with Calgary and San Jose with 70 points each.
All three teams are in action tonight on the road, with the Flames visiting the Philadelphia Flyers and the Sharks taking on the Vancouver Canucks.
Los Angeles was bested 5-2 on Sunday by the Jets, with Jeff Carter scoring twice.
However, Jonathan Quick gave up four goals on 21 shots through two periods before getting lifted in favor of Martin Jones, who stopped all seven shots he faced in relief.
"I do not even think it was close to be honest with you," said Carter. "We know what to expect coming in here. We have played here for the last four or five years. We did not play near close to what we should be playing to even come close to getting two points."
Carter's two goals gave him a team-leading 20 on the season and he has posted six goals and six assists over his last nine games.
The Oilers are coming off their fifth loss in seven games, defeated 2-1 by the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. Justin Schultz scored and Ben Scrivens allowed two goals on 27 shots.
"This one was a tough one to swallow," Oilers forward Jordan Eberle said. "We really wanted to beat these guys."
Defenseman Jeff Petry was made a healthy scratch for Saturday's game and was traded to the Montreal Canadiens on Monday in exchange for a pair of 2015 draft picks.
The Oilers received a second-round choice and a conditional fifth-round selection, which the Canadiens had previously acquired from Colorado.
Petry has four goals and 11 assists for 15 points in 59 games this season, his fifth in the NHL. The Oilers selected Petry in the second round of the 2006 draft.
"As well as Jeff played all year, we can't lose sight of the big picture here, we can't lose sight of the fact that we're the 29th team in the league and we have to handle our assets appropriately," Edmonton general manager Craig MacTavish said on his club's website.
The Oilers snapped a seven-game series losing streak to the Kings with a 3-2 shootout win at home on Dec. 30, but Los Angeles has still won 13 of the previous 17 meetings.
Quick is an excellent 12-1-5 in 18 lifetime meetings with the Oilers, posting a 1.52 goals against average and .940 save percentage. Scrivens, a former King netminder, is 1-1-0 in this matchup with a 3.22 GAA and .914 save percentage.
