Jonathan Toews scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Chicago Blackhawks earned a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

The Blackhawks were bolstered by the pre-trade deadline additions of forward Antoine Vermette and defenseman Kimmo Timonen, both of whom made their debuts with Chicago on Monday.

Vermette played 12:55, including a brief penalty-killing appearance, in his first game since being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday.

The game was doubly significant for Timonen, who played his first game of the season after being traded by the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday. The 39-year-old has recovered from blood clots that put his career in jeopardy.

Toews' 20th and 21st goals gave Chicago an early two-goal advantage. His first was set up by a tremendous pass by Michal Rozsival and the second came while the Blackhawks were shorthanded.

Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward was pulled in favor of Anton Khudobin for the third period after allowing four goals on 18 shots.

The Blackhawks snapped Carolina's three-game win streak and earned their third victory in the last four games.
