The San Jose Sharks didn't acquire Ben Smith to score goals, but he did so anyway in his debut Monday.

Smith got his stick on a point shot by Marc-Edouard Vlasic, deflecting it around Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price to give the Sharks the lead in the first period.

Smith scored a career-high 14 goals last season. The 26-year-old forward had five goals in 61 games with the Chicago Blackhawks before being traded to San Jose.
