The Toronto Maple Leafs made a number of deals in the days leading up to the trade deadline, moving David Clarkson, Cody Franson, Mike Santorelli and Daniel Winnik, as well as deals on deadline day shipping out Olli Jokinen and Korbinian Holzer.

But the biggest Maple Leafs news Monday was what didn't come to fruition: moving defenseman Dion Phaneuf and forward Joffrey Lupul.

Darren Dreger of TSN reports that the Leafs could have moved Phaneuf, but decided they could make a better deal in the offseason. Dreger also notes the Maple Leafs did speak with a couple of teams about a Lupul deal.

Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet mentioned on-air that the the Leafs discussed Phaneuf with Detroit, but the Red Wings weren't willing to part with prospect Anthony Mantha.

Phaneuf has 23 points in 51 games for Toronto, while Lupul has 19 points in 36 games.
