Blackhawks acquire D Timonen from Flyers
The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenseman Kimmo Timonen from Philadelphia on Friday for a 2015 second-round draft pick and a conditional 2016 fourth-rounder.
Timonen is set to return after being sidelined all season because of blood clots discovered in his leg and lungs last summer. The 39-year-old native of Finland has been expected to retire after this season, although the trade could change his plans.
Timonen's health problems occurred following a blocked shot, combined with a hereditary blood disorder. It has kept him off the ice throughout this season, and during his recovery he spoke with other players suffering the same malady.
''Somebody called me Dr. Timonen,'' he said. ''The minimum was six months to be on blood thinners, and obviously I have a lot of time to really do some researching and see what's the deal with it.''
Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said between the first and second period of Friday night's game at Tampa Bay that Timonen will practice Sunday and could play soon after.
''He's fresh, he's ready to go,'' Bowman said. ''Once we get him up to speed, he's a great player.''
In 1,092 NHL games, he has 117 goals and 454 assists. He ranks third among active NHL defensemen with 571 points while playing for Nashville and Philadelphia.
Timonen has played in five Olympics for Finland and has appeared in 87 Stanley Cup playoff games.
Chicago also placed defenseman Johnny Oduya on injured reserve.
Bowman is also looking to add a forward before the trade deadline with star Patrick Kane on long-term injured reserve after breaking his broken left collarbone Tuesday.
''We're not done making calls,'' Bowman said.

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall praised Timonen and predicted he will help the Blackhawks.
''He's a consummate professional,'' Hextall said. ''He's going to have a good influence on Chicago. Players like this don't fall off trees.
'' I understand he hasn't played, but on the flip side of him not playing, he's a rested hockey player and he's probably in the best shape of his life. ''
