Report: Canadiens hoping to add a forward, defenseman before deadline

The Montreal Canadiens don't appear to be done tinkering with their lineup ahead of next week's trade deadline, despite adding forward Devante Smith-Pelly on Tuesday.

"The Habs' GM (Marc Bergevin) is hoping to add both a forward and a defenseman before Monday's deadline," Pierre LeBrun said Tuesday on TSN's Insider Trading segment. "He's not going to mortgage the future for it, so if he doesn't do anything else so be it, but he's on the lookout."

LeBrun also went on to shoot down a rumor involving the Canadiens' interest in Toronto Maple Leafs injury-prone forward Joffrey Lupul.

"(It) would really surprise me," LeBrun said. "With that contract, three more years at $5.25 million a year, does not fit at all with what the Canadiens are trying to do here with their payroll and cap situation."

The Canadiens entered Tuesday in first place in the Eastern Conference.
