Islanders sign Nick Leddy to 7-year contract extension worth reported $38.5M

The New York Islanders are making a long-term commitment to Nick Leddy.

The club has signed the defenseman to a seven-year contract extension, as first reported by Arthur Staple of Newsday and since confirmed by the club.

Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed, but is believed to be worth $38.5 million.

"Nick has proven to be an elite defenseman in this league at a young age," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. "He’s the type of player on the ice, in the locker room and in the community that we’re thrilled to add as a cornerstone of our defensive core."

Leddy has been a big part of the team's rise to the top of the Metro Division and it was clear he wanted to remain for the long haul.

"We have something special in this locker room and I’m excited to be a part of it for seven more years," Leddy said. "From the start of my time here, the Islanders have been a first-class organization. I’m honored by their commitment to me and look forward to challenging for the Stanley Cup for years to come."

In his first season with the club after being acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks, Leddy, 23, has recorded eight goals and 17 assists and ranks third among all defensemen with a plus-251 based on the NHL's new shot attempt metric.
