Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin overtook Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin and New York Rangers winger Rick Nash for overall goal-scoring lead with an explosive power-play goal Wednesday night.

After scoring the game's opening marker less than five minutes into the first period, Ovechkin registered his second of the game and 29th of the season on a booming one-timer late in the second frame.

It was the captain's 14th goal in his last 17 games. His first of the evening came on a deflection after a shot by defenseman Karl Alzner early in the first.

Nicklas Backstrom assisted on both of Ovechkin's goals.
