Way-Back Playback: Jason Spezza's spectacular game-winning goal vs. Habs

Marc DesRosiers / USA TODAY Sports

Former Ottawa Senators captain Jason Spezza returns to his old stomping grounds Thursday night for the first time since being traded to the Dallas Stars last July.

Spezza, selected No. 2 overall in the 2001 draft by the Senators, amassed 251 goals and 436 assists in 686 games with Ottawa. Spezza, Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredsson formed one of the most dominant lines in hockey from 2005-08, leading the Senators to the 2007 Stanley Cup Final only to fall in five games to the Anaheim Ducks.

Spezza will receive a warm ovation from the crowd at Canadian Tire Centre and a touching video tribute upon his return. Included in the highlight reel will be Spezza's overtime winner versus the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 27, 2005, when he scored the most spectacular goal of his career - and arguably the most spectacular goal in Senators history to date.

Taking a pass from Heatley in the neutral zone, No. 19 soars down the right wing, undresses Canadiens defender Sheldon Souray and finishes high glove side on Jose Theodore to seal the victory.

Spezza was named the eighth captain in Senators history on Sept. 14, 2013 after Alfredsson left the team for the Detroit Red Wings.
