3 takeaways from Saturday's early games: Price is right (again)

Price blanks Capitals for 2nd straight shutout

Where would the Montreal Canadiens be without Carey Price?

Price stared down eight shots from Alex Ovechkin and 36 in total in a 1-0 overtime victory over the Washington Capitals for his second consecutive shutout. The Canadiens netminder has not allowed a goal in more than 152 minutes and is on a five-start winning streak.

The Canadiens sit atop the Atlantic Division because of Price, who tied Patrick Roy for fifth on the franchise's all-time shutouts list. Upcoming home games against the lowly Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils mean Price's streak could continue for some time.

Maple Leafs conclude disastrous January with a whimper

The Toronto Maple Leafs were unable to convert on 30 shots in a 1-0 loss against the Philadelphia Flyers - a result emblematic of one of the most frustrating months in franchise history.

Toronto went 1-11-1 in January, scoring 16 times in those 13 contests. The scoring drought is even more shocking considering the Maple Leafs were leading the league in offense earlier in the season.

February offers an opportunity for Toronto to turn things around, but more struggles will likely lead to some big trades as the deadline approaches.

Stars' power play explodes against Jets

The Dallas Stars struggled to get their power play going for much of the season, but they scored four times with the man advantage in a 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

Defenseman John Klingberg had a hand in three of the four power-play tallies, assisting on markers by Patrick Eaves and Jason Spezza before scoring one of his own on a 5-on-3. Shawn Horcoff also scored with the man advantage.

The Stars are 7-for-15 with the man advantage over their last three games and have recorded a power play goal in six of their last eight contests.
