Everything you need to know about the weekend in the NHL

Russell LaBounty / USA Today

Every Monday we take a look back at games from the weekend to get you caught up on all the news you may have missed.

All-Stars align in Columbus

The NHL regular season took a back seat to a celebration of the game's brightest stars in Columbus over the weekend.

Jonathan Toews and Nick Foligno captained the All-Star teams, selecting their rosters in a festive fantasy draft Friday. Team Foligno won the Skills Competition on Saturday, but Team Toews prevailed in a record-breaking 17-12 victory Sunday.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Ryan Johansen was voted MVP by the hometown fans, but Montreal Canadiens netminder Carey Price stole the show with his combination of wacky save attempts and fan interactions.

NHL sets sights on the future

The NHL took All-Star weekend as an opportunity to unveil its special events calendar for the next few years.

Commissioner Gary Bettman announced next season's outdoor game schedule Saturday, consisting of three separate events: a Winter Classic hosted by the Boston Bruins and a pair of Stadium Series games in Minnesota and Colorado.

The long-rumored 2016 World Cup of Hockey was officially announced Saturday as well. The tournament, which will take place in Toronto in September 2016, will feature six national teams (Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Finland) as well as a team of players from other European countries and one comprised of North American players under 23.

Non All-Stars enjoy a weekend vacation

While being selected to participate in All-Star weekend is an honor for any player, those left out of the festivities made the most of their time off.

With no games scheduled from Thursday to Monday, many players took the opportunity to enjoy a little vacation. Los Angeles Kings teammates Jarret Stoll and Marian Gaborik enjoyed some time on the slopes (and in the hot tub) with their significant others in Aspen.

Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson didn't seem to mind being an All-Star snub while relaxing in Mexico with his wife.

Other players were forced to miss the festivities due to injuries, including Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson and three goaltenders: Sergei Bobrovsky, Pekka Rinne and Jimmy Howard.

St. Louis Blues goaltender Brian Elliott was soaking up the sun on a beach in the Caribbean but cut his vacation short when he was offered an All-Star spot as an injury replacement.
