Report: Hurricanes, Sekera will resume contract negotiations soon

The Carolina Hurricanes are going to take another shot at signing defenseman Andrej Sekera to a contract extension.

The team will resume negotiations with Sekera's agent over the next few weeks, according to a report by ESPN's Pierre LeBrun. The 28-year-old blue-liner could fetch a solid return at the trade deadline after recording a career-high 44 points last season, so Carolina is likely to deal him if it cannot resign him.

"With our free agents, we'd like to be able to keep them and sign them, at the end of the day it has to be the right term and the right number," Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis told ESPN.com Monday. "If it is, then great. If it isn't, then we'll probably have to move them prior to March 2."

Sekera is in the final season of a four-year, $11-million deal.
