Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard did not take the ice to start the second period of Friday night's game against the New York Islanders.

Petr Mrazek came on in relief after Howard left with a lower-body injury, the team later announced.

According to the Red Wings, Howard was pulled as a precaution. He stopped eight of nine shots in the opening frame.

Head coach Mike Babcock was unable to provide an update after the game.
