Oilers fire head coach Dallas Eakins

Let there be doughnuts. 

The powers that be have finally swarmed in on Edmonton Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins, who was fired from his post on Monday. 

General manager Craig MacTavish pulled the trigger and will step back behind the bench on an interim basis to replace the terminated head coach. He will serve as coach during a "transition' period" until current Oklahoma City Barons head coach Todd Nelson is ready to take over for the remainder of the season.  

Eakins, who was brought in partly due to his impressive resume with young talent, stumbled throughout his first NHL head coaching tenure and finished with a record of 36-62-14 in less than two seasons on the job.

MacTavish led the Oilers to the Stanley Cup final in 2006, but was fired after missing the playoffs in three straight seasons.
