The NHL Department of Player Safety will surely be taking a close look at this hit thrown by Anaheim Ducks forward Kyle Palmieri on Chicago Blackhawks defender Johnny Oduya on Friday night:

Palmieri was assessed a five-minute major for boarding for the poorly-timed hit, and received an additional 10-minute game misconduct.

Oduya wasn't injured on the play, although he did sustain a significant cut on the cheek as a result of having his face driven into the dasher. Perhaps the fact that Oduya was bleeding after the hit played a role in Palmieri's harsh penalty.

Blackhawks fourth-liner Dan Carcillo apparently leaped off the bench after the hit but was prevented from fighting by a teammate.
