This Day in Hockey History

Andy Marlin / USA TODAY Sports

1999 - Roberto Luongo records first NHL win

Luongo appears in his first NHL game with the New York Islanders, stopping 43 shots to top the Boston Bruins, 2-1.

After 16 seasons with three different teams, Luongo has appeared in 820 career games - and counting - with a record of 380-317-98.

Isn't it fitting his first win came against the Bruins?

1957 - Gordie Howe becomes NHL's all-time assists leader

Mr. Hockey puts himself into the record books during a 3-3 tie against the Toronto Maple Leafs, recording his 409th NHL assist.

Howe totals 1,809 points in 25 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. He also plays one season for the Hartford Whalers at age 51, recording 41 points. He finishes his career with 1,049 assists - good for ninth all-time.

Howe wins six Art Ross and six Hart trophies during his NHL career.

1979 - Billy Smith scores NHL's first goal by a goaltender

New York Islanders goaltender Billy Smith scores his first, and last, NHL goal thanks to an unlucky tip by Colorado Rockies forward Rob Ramage.

Smith is the first NHL goaltender to be credited with a goal.

He is also credited with 12 assists during his career, and is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.
