Report: Kontiola, Loktionov sign with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the KHL

KHL club Lokomotiv Yaroslavl reportedly loaded up on fringe NHL forwards Wednesday, signing short-lived Toronto Maple Leafs center Petri Kontiola and former New Jersey Devils and Los Angeles Kings forward Andrei Loktionov, according to Igor Eronko of sports.ru.

Kontiola was signed to a one-year contract by the Maple Leafs this summer, but got lost in the shuffle during training camp. The player and club recently agreed to terminate his deal after he passed through unconditional waivers. In 11 games with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, Kontiola failed to record a point.

Loktionov is a dynamic puck-possession player, but hasn't scored enough to justify a regular top-six forward spot and doesn't have the size or defensive chops that teams look for in bottom-six pieces. Loktionov injured his shoulder late last season, was non-tendered by the Carolina Hurricanes in June and didn't catch on with an NHL team this summer.
