Report: Panthers attempting to trade veterans to make room for younger players

Ed Szczepanski / USA TODAY Sports

The Florida Panthers are trying to clean out the litter box, so to speak.

General manager Dale Tallon is attempting to trade unnamed veterans in an attempt to clear space on the roster for younger players such as Vincent Trocheck and Rocco Grimaldi, a team source told Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel.

Among the list of potential candidates to be moved are Tomas Fleischmann, Tomas Kopecky and Sean Bergenheim.

Trocheck, a third-round pick in 2011, has appeared in ten games this season, with a goal and five assists to his name. The club is believed to be even higher on Grimaldi, a second-round pick that same year, who scored his first NHL goal on Nov. 22 before being sent to the AHL the next day due to roster constraints.

The Panthers sit 21st in total payroll this season, with the aforementioned veterans - all of who are set to become unrestricted free agents at season's end - ranking in the top six among the team's highest-paid players.

Clearly the Cats are pushing for a youth movement, hoping the kids can contribute more than their seniors. Whether teams around the league will swipe at these pieces of yarn is yet to be determined.
