The Carolina Hurricanes have claimed forward Andrej Nestrasil on waivers from the Detroit Red Wings, the club announced Thursday.

“Andrej is a young player with good size who we feel can contribute to our group of forwards,” said general manager Ron Francis. “He has improved in each of his pro seasons and took a big step last year with Grand Rapids.”

The 23-year-old - drafted in the third round of the 2009 NHL Draft - recorded 16 goals and 20 assists for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins in 2013-14, and two assists in 13 games for Detroit this season.

Nestrasil is expected to join the Hurricanes on their current West Coast road trip.
