Blues' Backes diagnosed with a concussion

Bruce Fedyck / USA TODAY Sports

St. Louis Blues center, U.S. Olympian, and 2014 Selke Trophy nominee David Backes has been diagnosed with a concussion, the club announced Thursday:

Backes' head hit the ice hard following a big, but legal, hit thrown by Dallas Stars defenseman Trevor Daley in a game Tuesday that the Blues ultimately won, 4-3.

The irascible top-of-the-lineup centerman has managed five points in eight games so far this season, while logging major minutes for the Blues up front. With Backes joining fellow center Paul Stastny on the injured list, the Blues are likely to be a bit thin down the middle over the medium-term.

Expect the club to lean heavily on secondary centerman like Jori Lehtera and Patrik Berglund in the interim.
