Red Wings' Weiss injures groin during 1st game of AHL conditioning stint

Stephen Weiss' journey back to the Detroit Red Wings lineup after an injury plagued 2013-14 season has hit another bump.

The Red Wings center was sent down to the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning stint earlier this week; during his first game with the club Wednesday, he was forced to sit out the third period due to a lower-body injury.

General manager Ken Holland said Weiss' groin was sore after 40 minutes of play, leading to his removal from the game.

His status will be updated after further evaluation on Thursday.

Weiss, who saw only eight minutes of action in one appearance for the Red Wings this season, was limited to 26 appearances last year, recording two goals and two assists.

As a reminder, his contract with the Red Wings carries an annual cap hit of $4.9 million through the end of the 2017-18 season.
