Penguins GM Rutherford on Fleury's future: 'I do want to re-sign him'

Charles LeClaire / USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury is set to become a free agent at season's end, but general manager Jim Rutherford doesn't plan to let him go.

Rutherford told Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, "As long as I'm GM here, he's my goalie. My plan is to re-sign him when the time is right."

Fleury's seven-year, $35 million contract expires this season and there is no timetable for when both sides will meet to hash out an extension.

"I do want to re-sign him," Rutherford said. "I believe in him."

In all of the Penguins four games this season, Fleury has manned the net for a record of 3-1-0 with a .915 save percentage.
